Santa Maria La Nave
Italy
Santa Maria La Nave is an authentic boutique winery on Mount Etna, established by Giuseppe "Peppino" Mulone in 1954. Sonia Spadaro (Peppino’s grand-daughter) continuous his tradition, cultivating indigenous varieties such as Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, as well as Grecanico Dorato in ancient vineyards with rich, fertile volcanic soils. Passion and respect for the unique microclimate, along with artisanal vinification are at the heart of the Santa Maria La Nave project.
Santa Maria La Nave mission is to protect the viticulture in this wonderful territory and pass it on to the future generations. La Nave 1ha vineyard is situated on the northwestern slopes of Mount Etna, at an altitude of 1,100m; one of the highest vineyards in Europe, planted with the almost extinct local grape variety Grecanico Dorato. The climate provides warm, dry days during the summer, with significant diurnal temperature variation during the ripening period; during the summer the day time temperatures can reach 35°C and drop to just over 1°C at night, encouraging a gradual ripening process resulting in rich flavours, balancing acidity and aromatic complexity. The highly organic soil has significant residues of old lave flow, imparting marked minerality in the resulting wine.
In the opposite side of Mount Etna at 800m above sea level lies the municipality of Viagrande. On the southeastern slope of the volcano, on the incredibly steep side of an ancient crater of Mount Etna is produced CalmaRossa, an authentic Etna Rosso Doc, refined, rich in minerals and with a proud volcanic taste from an ancient vineyard of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio with a pre-phylloxera heart.
