Ktima Ligas
Greece
Since ancient times, the region of Pella situated in northern Greece, was associated with wine making and described as "the mother of wine, where vines abound". The region always hosted great vineyards. It was here that the tragic poet Euripides wrote and staged his last play, Bacchae. Indeed, it was in this specific area where the French army, camped by the Galikos River in the early 20th century, came in search of quality wine.
Having studied oenology in France, Thomas Ligas (pioneer of organic farming in Greece) began in 1985, to study the local ecosystems, exploring viticulture and vinification, and seeking to accentuate the distinctive qualities of Pella’s terroir. The vines near Giannitsa are set on well-drained soils of loam and limestone, blessed with a lot of sun and fresh air. A vibrant ecosystem of indigenous Greek grape varieties (Roditis, Assyrtiko, Kydonitsa, Xinomavro, Moschomavro, and Limniona) is encouraged by the application of permacultura to preserve naturally occurring turf; vines are kept naturally healthy by their surroundings, and little intervention or treatment is needed.
Today the Ligas family, Thomas, Melissanthi and Jason, work hard to find that perfect balance between quality and quantity, although the former always takes precedent. Melissanthi and Jason, after their enology studies in Montpelier, worked to acclaimed vignerons, such as Jacques Selosse before returning to their motherland. The arrival of these two talented, young spirits brought a “creative revolution” in Ktima Ligas. Today, accompanied by the wisdom and experience of mr.Thomas, they produce natural wines of extreme finesse, complexity, and elegance that are essential part of all the Michelin star restaurants in Europe.
